Description

To a Potential Colleague,

I am seeking a software developer to join my team, building tooling for Self Fund Health. We are directly addressing the healthcare cost crisis by working with self-funded employer groups to actually achieve lower cost, high quality healthcare for their employees. As Self Fund Health continues to grow, we need to speed up our building of tools to support the team.

This is not your average software development role. We primarily leverage a low and no code technology stack (Xano, Bubble), and therefore work at a fairly high level of abstraction (think: coding business logic). This stack helps us move faster and spend more time focused on business problems, rather than focus on devops type issues and infrastructure. We have a deep belief that No and Low Code is not a barrier to scale, especially for a non-software company (we’re a healthcare company).

I discovered the No and Low-Code space as a product manager who wanted to be closer to delivering working software, and before that as a disillusioned technology management consultant. You’d be great for this role if your background is also business problem oriented, plus you have a keen technical sense. Ideally, you have significant experience with some sort of visual programming or workflow automation tooling. If you’ve got that, we can help you learn our specific tools.

On the healthcare domain side, pre-existing knowledge of the US healthcare system is key - especially from a data perspective. You should know what a provider is, understand basic insurance design terms (Deductibles, Coinsurance, Out Of Pocket Maximums), grasp the basics of claims (Procedure and Diagnosis codes), and be aware of ongoing industry trends and conversations about steerage, network design, and discounting.

This is a software-delivery focused role - you will independently design, build, and maintain features across a set of full stack web apps. You’ll own the entire SDLC for your features, and will need to be comfortable working directly with other stakeholders (mostly internal). You’ll need to do things including building page designs, designing and integrating with APIs, analyzing fairly large claims data sets, and modeling the data needs and concepts for new features.

Other details include:

  • Fully Remote. Must be in the US, and authorized to work here. Slight preference if you’re in the upper midwest (most of the team is in Wisconsin).
  • We’re currently mid-conversation about if this role (and the team overall) will join Lost Sheep Advisory (my consulting company) or Self Fund Health directly. Regardless, the role is the same.
  • Unlimited PTO, healthcare reimbursement, and a Simple IRA (note: specific benefit structure may vary based on whether you join Lost Sheep Advisory or Self Fund Health directly)
  • We’ll pay you at least $80,000/yr. Probably more, and probably an equity component too, depending on experience and specific circumstance.

If you’ve read this far and are thinking “this sounds like something I’d enjoy and be great at”, then I want to hear from you. I’m purposefully not putting a link or application instructions here. If you have the independence and resourcefulness required for this role, you will figure out how to get in touch with me directly - it shouldn’t be hard.

Let’s build something that actually fixes healthcare.

Best, Brian Alderman
